Pivoting, (Maybe) for the Last Time

The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.

I’m usually deep in thought during my walks to and from the office, looking down and occasionally bumping into people. 😄

So, recently, I was walking with M, my partner in crime!

Then I got the idea that I love people or writers or bloggers who focus on one blog all their life, publishing consistently and not haphazardly like me.

Let's look at a few of my favorite bloggers and writers online.

  • Maria Popova, The Brain Picker of The Marginalian
  • Lawrence Yeo- Founder of More to That
  • Kyle - Slower at Sloww
  • Derek Sivers - Siverer at sive.rs
  • David Clear writes only about writing at Clearer at Writing Cooperative pub on Medium.

Everyone replied to my fan mail except one 🙂

Even great writers in my office have this single-mindedness and consistent publishing schedule. One post every week on Saturday means one post every week on Saturday no matter what.

Here I am, writing and publishing as I fancy.

No fixed routine.

Why?

Maybe I consider writing as a routine, not a ritual. The former is a formality while the latter is sacred. Doing your ritual everyday is like praying or offering a piece of your soul in reverence to existence.

The Pivot is...

Though I am getting this strong urge to make this webhome on Ghost (a non-profit org and carbon neutral co.) the only blog, I can't resist the equally strong urge to post on other platforms as well.

Not for money, no way!

Every platform (Medium, Substack, BearBlog, etc.) has its unique, niche, and passionate readers. Some platforms, like BearBlog and Medium, have good vibes because of such clean, simple, and minimalist design, while others don't.

Due to my multi-polar condition, I can't stop myself from publishing a small piece on these three platforms:

  1. Ghost (Whole Explorers): Reflections on the human longing to be free.
  2. BearBlog (Love Unites): Reflections on how Love alone is worth the fight.
  3. Medium (Story of Theseus): Reflections on human longing to tell and listen to stories, memoirs, and personal essays.
  4. Substack (Enigma of India): Reflections on multiple poles of this sacred and holy place that A(man) is a pilgrim of.

How I intend to proceed?

As you can see, I described my ambitions behind Whole Explorers and Love Unites here in the least words so I have the most clarity about them. However, I’ll try my best to offer you something on other platforms as well.

I’ve started to become a morning person again. Usually, I have an hour of leisure to do what I love.

So, I wonder why can't I write, publish (and forget because I hate Marketing!) on one platform daily?

One hour in the morning is enough for me to write, edit, polish, and publish.

Yes, I'd love to 'earn' or 'receive' alms or donations or gifts (in the form of money) through my writing, not because I'm greedy but due to these two reasons:

  1. Because people value something or someone only when they pay for it.
  2. Because I’m providing value to the readers and know my worth.

But, I used to feel guilty earning money doing something I love. Somehow, I associated money with malice. Like earning money through writing would malign the sacred act of writing.

However, it need not be so.

Why?

Because I could always:

  1. Donate part of the money to charities.
  2. Reinvest the earnings to improve the blog.
  3. Offer more value by investing in self-learning.

I am gradually coming to a better relationship with money. It’s not evil just like technology; it depends on how we use it.

It is a great enabler. You could do a hell lot of good in the world with money. Middle-class people who have experienced money scarcity would understand me.

Finding Soul-Satisfaction

I'm soon opening memberships and donations, handled by my 'creator' and 'sustainer'. I'll just create the magic and illusion of words, images, videos, and podcasts!

There’s no better feeling than earning money doing what I love the most and directing it where it’s needed the most through the people I care about the most 🙂

It took me years and years of acceptance to come to terms with it. No one was stopping me from earning money from writing; it was just an internal barrier.

Maybe I’ve realized the real meaning of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s words:

The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.

So, the job will feed my body, and earnings from writing, photography, singing, and talking to like-minded people will feed my soul.

I've finally found the "soul-satisfaction" I was missing :)
